WHAT TO SEE

Although these two sets of trails have been enjoyed by local residents for years, it wasn’t until the 2000s that work was done on both to make them official. You can make a very pleasant 1.3-mile loop out of the Skyline Trails, an equally enjoyable 1.4-mile out and back with a bit more elevation loss and gain on the Croisan Scenic Trail, or, if you’re willing to walk the few blocks in between, combine everything into one 3.4-mile excursion, which is the route described here. It’s also the recommended route, because while the Skyline Natural Area Trailhead has plenty of public parking available, especially during non-school hours, the Croisan Scenic Trailhead begins at the end of a residential drive with very limited on-street parking. So combining the two into one walk is the best way to get the full experience while simultaneously being a courteous neighbor.

Beginning at the Salem Area Trail Alliance (SATA) signed “Skyline Natural Area Trailhead,” hike 100 feet to an unsigned junction. Please note that all trail junctions here are unsigned; however, there is an informative PDF map with trail names on the SATA website. Make a left and begin hiking on the Sublime Trail through a predominantly Douglas fir and bigleaf maple forest. At a junction, keep right and continue, descending to a grove of snaggled oaks. Down below is Croisan Creek. This is about as close as you will get to the creek during the hike, but you should be able to spot it and hear it on occasion.
